There are different ways of knowing' Jeanette Winterson About the Author Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was one of the most brilliant and distinguished dramatists of the late nineteenth century, as well as a lauded essayist, short story writer and novelist. In 1891 he met and fell in love with Lord Alfred Douglas; in 1895, Wilde brought an unsuccessful libel action against Douglas's father. After losing the case he was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for acts of gross indecency. He died in Paris in 1900.
