He was born in Bremerton, Washington, in 1947. An honors graduate of the University of Washington, he also studied architecture in Rome in 1970, and did post-graduate work at the Architectural Association in London in 1976. After starting his professional career in California, he established his own firm in New York City in 1976. In 1989, the Museum of Modern Art presented Holl’s work in a special two-man show, purchas- ing several drawings for their permanent collection. In 1991, Holl’s work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Walker Ar t Center in Minneapolis, in the series entitled "Architecture Tomorrow". This exhibition was moved to the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, Washington and in 1992-93 exhib- ited throughout Europe. Since then, Holl has taken part in many individual and group exhibitions. Some of his most recent exhibits have included 'Parallax', opened in 2000 at the Max Protetch Gallery in New York and then taken to the American Academy in Rome; 'Architecture+Water' at the Van Allen Institute in New York in 2001; and 'A New World Trade Center' in the Max Protetch Gallery in 2002
