Since its first appearance in 18th century treatises, the definition of Mannerism has been the subject of much debate among art theorist. The term, used for the painters in the second half of the 16th century who were fololowers of the great Renaissance artists, refferd to their practice of imitating the style, the "maniera", or manner, of the masters held to have attained the highest levels of of perfection.
