Internationally acclaimed behavioral science and social media expert Dr. Brian Primack, MD, PhD, makes the realist's argument that we do not need to give up social media, delete all of our online accounts, or discard our phones to live healthier, happier lives. Dr. Primack shows how what we consume online affects our well-being, and in response he gives us a personalized "tech diet" for enjoying a balanced relationship with social media.

Arming readers with new, evidence-based research, You Are What You Click teaches us why many of our current social media habits may be making us feel more alone and depressed. He then empowers us to take back control by being selective about the way we spend our time online.

Primack's research reveals how surprising nuances may modify the effect of social media use, such as our personality traits, how many different platforms we use, and whether we've met our social media friends face-to-face. With short, actionable chapters, you'll learn how to:

• Break off toxic relationships and select positive ones instead.
• Overcome comparison syndrome.
• Fill your feed with uplifting content.
• Manage your news intake and stop doomscrolling.
• Improve your sleep, create "tech holidays," and much more.

With innovative science, and an engaging new protocol for managing your relationship with technology, you'll discover how to find inspiring, creative ways to make social media work for you.

Review

"A convincing guide on how to build a better relationship with social media, making a strong case that social media leads to depression, anxiety, and loneliness--and offering positive advice on how to change.. The suggestion to 'be positive, be selective, and be creative' makes cutting out or cutting down on one's social media usage feel doable. This hits the sweet spot, offering small steps to empower readers while breezily educating on how social media influences their health." --Publishers Weekly

I highly recommend this book if you want to rethink using social media so it doesn't use you." --TIFFANY SHLAIN, Emmy-nominated filmmaker and author of the national bestseller 24/6

"Clear and engaging, You Are What You Click is the book we need right now. Dr. Primack shows us why social media can't replace in-person interaction, but also why we can't ignore its benefits. This book is the middle way forward. If you want to find a balance with technology in your life, this is the book for you." --Jean M. Twenge, PhD, author of iGen: Why Today's Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy--and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood
